Abstract

The growing impact of the new information and communication technologies (ICTs) in different areas of society generates both opportunities for the creation of added value as well as adaptation challenges in different productive sectors. In the labor market, for workers this translates into a greater demand for skills, mainly digital, and constant updating. The objective of this paper is to analyze whether the greater diffusion of ICTs, a characteristic of smart cities, has an influence on the unemployment rate of capital and/or metropolitan cities in Latin America. For this purpose, a sample of 29 cities in the region, belonging to 13 countries, is analyzed, and a comparison between means is made through an Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The results thus obtained allow inferring that technology is a significant variable to explain unemployment rates at city level. Furthermore, it can be confirmed that there is a negative correlation between the unemployment rate and the level of intelligence or technological development of cities (technological cities).
