Preventing newborn seizures is important for avoiding neurodevelopmental problems. Phenobarbital and phenytoin are the first-choice drugs for neonatal seizures. When these drugs are not sufficient to control seizures, alternative therapy are needed. Although, studies concerning topiramate use in newborns is insufficient, it is preferred as the third choice antiepileptic drug, because of its neuroprotective effect.
