Abstract

Aim: This work aimed at studying the effects of β sitosterol on the viability and proliferation of lung adenocarcinoma cells- A549. Materials and Methods: In vitro anti-proliferative effect of β sitosterol on human lung adenocarcinoma cell line A549 at the time interval of 24 h. Results: β sitosterolon significantly reduced viability of cancer cells at all assayed concentrations, the higher doses also reducing cell proliferationl when compared to untreated control cells but in the case of Vero cells –non cancerous cells produced 5% reduction of cell viability even at at higher concentration, whereas the β- sitosterol at the lower concentrations did not affect the viability and the β-sitosterol was safe for vero normal cells. Conclusion: These results revealed that β-sitosterol has anntiproliferative effect in human lung adenocarcinoma cells-A549. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
