Abstract

The subject of this article is the history of the establishment of the city of Mersin. The article examines the existing theses on who established Mersin, its location, the origin of its name, when, from where and for what purposes Alawis, who were one of the founding elements of the city, arrived in the region. It concludes that the existing knowledge is inadequate and that the theses repeated in many publications to date are not sound. Based on the facts in the field, the article develops an alternative thesis. The author suggests that Mersin must have been established near Yumuktepe by the Alawis who had migrated from Syria around the year 1800 and its name possibly comes from the plant myrtle (mersin in Turkish).
