Abstract
- As the author starts the third decade of his life, he reflects on his childhood of poverty and the impact that it has had on my philosophy of education. He grew up raised by a single mother who worked up to three jobs, at times, to make ends meet. He was born in the Third Ward section of Houston, an inner city neighborhood where the odds were against an African-American male child. According to all of the statistics, he had a better chance of dying due to violence or ending up in prison then he did of surviving thy eighteenth birthday or going to college.
