Abstract

The paper is intended to address the effects of the abandoned Jing-Han railway bridge piers in the lower Yellow River upon the local plan-forms and propose for countermeasures. The study will be of significant implications in local flood fighting, restoring local ecological landscape and water diversion. The authors, using multiple-year field data of local channel plan-forms measured near the piers, analyzed the features and reasons for the near plan-form changes and the effects of the piers and made a suggestion for curing the negative consequences. First, the main stream touching the deflecting works in the reach near the abandoned Jing-Han Railway Bridge piers have been found shifting downstream, with the main stream thread tending to get straightened, consequently making the main stream out of touch with the several neighboring deflecting works. Second, the remaining piers and their supporting stone works have been found to act as a comb, resisting and spreading the local flow, affecting the plan-form significantly. Last, it is suggested that efforts should be made to remove the abandoned piers and ripraps in the range of 600 m within the channel regulating alignment lines, and dredge the neighboring reaches so that the main stream deflected from the upstream works can approach directly the receiving arm of the downstream works at Laotianan, getting deflected by the works, further downstream, at Baohezhai, Mazhuang and Huayuankou.
