Abstract
- Adult patients on hemodialysis experience a high prevalence of poor oral health and periodontitis. The chronic inflammation associated with poor periodontal health can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality among patients on hemodialysis. A systematic review of research articles published from 2012-2018 was conducted to synthesize current literature on the subject. Forty-three articles were identified. Findings were summarized into two categories: clinical measurements and lifestyle/quality of life. We suggest the development, implementation, and evaluation of oral health nursing interventions and periodontal treatments among patients on hemodialysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
