Abstract

Graphical method for calculation of the orientation and values of the normal and shear stresses, due to gravity or tectonic loading on joints, faults, layer contacts, metamorphic foliation, dyke contacts and others is presented in this text. It is based on stereographic solution for finding of the resultant stress on geological discontinuity, located in the space by measuring with geologic compass. In the text methods are discussed for finding of the values and orientation of the principal lithostatic or tectonic stresses in the rock massif. This method can be employed for finding of the approximate values and orientation of the shear and normal stresses that acts on joints and faults in benches, road cliffs, tunnels foundations, bridge foundations and etch., using data from geological mapping and land surveying of the topography of the rock massif, at the stage of preliminary or detailed project development for road construction.
