Abstract

If you are interested in understanding the process of diminishing and even dismantling the role of the state, currently advocated by the right-wing, and do not have an extensive background in public finance, June Sekera's short book, I The Public Economy in Crisis i , would be a good place to start. Sekera does a fine job of showing the connection between the idea of limited government and the ideological stranglehold of neoclassical economics when she discusses Paul Samuelson's idea that economic participation of the government can be justified only in the case of market failure. Because the Brief is grounded in the theories of popular sovereignty and liberal democracy, Sekera underrepresents the coercive power of the state, as well as class processes.
