Abstract

The article discusses a 2019 study on fat embolism syndrome (FES) in sickle cell disease (SCD) and its diagnosis and emergency therapies. Topics covered include the findings of predilection for non-homozygous patients and those with previous mild disease (PMD) and of infection with human parvovirus B19 (HPV B19), and the use of red cell exchange transfusion (RCE) with varying outcomes. Also noted is the pre-emptive treatment with RCE +- therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) before organ failure.
