Abstract

Preterm newborns (NB) have a high rate of inguinal hernias, which is why the largest proportion of inguinal hernias have been performed in this population, over the years the management of inguinal hernias has been controversial, mainly due to the technique used for its repair, the time in which it should be performed and whether a bilateral revision should be made at the time of surgery to prevent the presentation of a bilateral hernia later in the patient's life. In this review, we present the main results that have been reported by numerous studies in the past and nowadays in reference to the most controversial factors related to the repair of inguinal hernias. Exposing the behavior of laparoscopy and conventional surgery in the repair of hernias, also the optimal time of surgery as well as the aspects that are considered to determine the same in each population and finally the results of analysis in where the prevalence of bilateral hernias is evaluated.
