Abstract

Shear capacity of carbon reinforced concrete slab bridges with c‐shaped shear reinforcement – Theoretical and experimental investigations for two road bridges in Gaggenau In contrast to design for bending, both engineers and researchers are still confronted with fundamental questions regarding shear design of carbon reinforced concrete. While numerous applications for slabs and thin façade panels without shear reinforcement, some with first general approvals, already exist, there is still a need for research into the technical and economic application of components with shear reinforcement made of non‐metallic textiles. For the construction of two road bridges made of carbon concrete with c‐shaped shear reinforcement, static and cyclic tests were carried out at the Institute of Structural Concrete at RWTH Aachen University. The results show surprisingly low scatter and an excellent fatigue behavior. Overall, there are clear parallels to the shear failure of reinforced concrete or concrete with Fiber‐Reinforced Polymer (FRP) rebars. This paper highlights the application potential and further challenges for the use of carbon concrete apart from filigree individual applications and mere objects of art. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
