Abstract

Highlights from the article: For the non-specialist, this catalogue of seaweeds can be challenging to read, but the illustrations and beautiful images of herbarium specimens, species I in situ i and microscope images, make it more accessible. The last published New Zealand flora (Broady et al. [1]; Harper et al. [2]; Nelson [3]) listed about 900 species of seaweeds in New Zealand, including the subantarctic and Kermadec Islands. Some groups of algae are notoriously difficult to identify morphologically, even by specialists, and molecular data are now considered essential for correct species identification (e.g. species of I Ulva i , the filamentous green alga I Cladophora, i and red coralline algae).
