Abstract

Examines a minor mystery in Hesiod's "Theogony," centering around the Melian Nymphs in order to assess the suggestions that the Melian Nymphs were the mothers of the human race. Afterlife of Hesiod's Melian Nymphs over a thousand years later, in the allegorizing myths of late Neoplatonism; Suggestion that the Hesiodic myth, namely the castration of Ouranos, has close similarities to a central Neoplatonic myth.
