Abstract

The author reflects on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in an era of unstable international politics and asymmetric warfare. Topics include the recognition by the American Psychiatric Association of PTSD in 1980, the adoption by military psychiatrists of the PTSD concept to asses the mental health of active personnel and veterans, and a study in England and Wales showing that one in 13 children experienced PTSD before reaching 18 years of age.
