Abstract

Being the arterial hypertension (HA) is one of the major public health problems in Brazil and with high prevalence rates in the elderly, especially women, this article aims to analyze the possible contributions of Yoga practice to hypertensive elderly women. For this, a bibliographic review was used. The following keywords were searched in the Capes, ScIELO, LILACS and Google Academic portals databases: Hypertension and Elderly, Yoga and Elderly, Physical Exercise and Hypertension, Yoga and Hypertension. Through the reading of the abstracts, studies in Portuguese, without date specification, that analyzed or contributed to the understanding of Yoga as a non-pharmacological alternative to HA were selected. After the inclusion and exclusion criteria, only 3 articles were found that collaborated to investigate the impacts of Yoga on the control of BP of elderly women. It was concluded that there is a shortage of studies that deal with the effects of Yoga in the BP of this group. Despite this, it was possible to verify that Yoga is a significant alternative of physical exercise for the control of the arterial pressure (BP) and for the improvement of the quality life of the elderly women.
