Abstract
- Several affections can affect the VII pair of cranial nerve - facial nerve, causing paresis of the facial mimetic muscles. In peripheral facial palsy (PFP), the patient presents different clinical signs of disability, and it is possible to identify a characteristic pattern associated with paralysis. Thus, the present study aimed to verify the profile of patients with peripheral facial palsy treated at a school clinic in Anápolis-GO. An observational, descriptive cross-sectional study of data collected from the medical records of patients with a clinical diagnosis of PFP attended at a school clinic from January 2013 to December 2017 was performed. 37 medical records were analyzed, one excluded due to lack of data. Of the total number of patients, 55.5% were female, with a mean age of 36.7 ± 16.6 years. Most patients live in the northern region of Anápolis. In 2013 there were the highest number of new cases being treated. In 53% of them, the etiology for PFP was idiopathic, with left hemiface paralysis, and 22% had systemic arterial hypertension as an associated pathology and 28% had a history of PFP in the family. An average of 11.4 ± 13.5 individual sessions of 50 minutes occurred once a week. It was observed that the more age and more sessions the patient needs to recover (p=0.019). The search for the physiotherapy service contributed positively to the reestablishment of facial nerve functions in these patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
