Abstract

Duly understanding the cultural codes of the Ottoman society is possible by discussing the actions and behavior towards the general principles, morals and laws, and reactions that were developed against these actions. Factors that influenced the honor of individuals in the Ottoman society should not be considered in a narrow perspective. An individual's character; his compliance with the environment and approach against assaults on his honor and self-respect are significant clues as to whether or not the individual is an honorable person. A person's compliance with the social norms indicates whether or not he is an honorable individual. If a person is one that complies with the social norms and is a trusted individual he is coded as honorable in the minds of the society, whereas those who behave to the contrary are coded as dishonorable. This study based on Konya court records; honorable and ethical individuals are generally against those who disregard the social norms, or at least support one another to a certain extent during the legal process.
