Abstract
- Aim: Socially desirable responding is a frequent source of errors and "nonvalidity" in research and in diagnostic procedures using self-statement questionnaire methods. The aim of the study was to verify the psychometric properties of the Slovak version of the BIDR (Balanced Inventory of Desirable Responding; Paulhus 1984), aimed at assessing the desirable responding, and to compare different methods of scoring data from the scale. Method: The research sample consisted of 499 Slovak people aged 18-60 years and was created on the basis of representative gender, age and region quotas. For data collection, the BIDR scale translated into Slovak was used in both full and shortened versions. In order to assess the methodology validity, relations with sociodemographic variables and variables depicting typically negatively and positively assessed characteristics - moral disengagement, self-esteem, life satisfaction - were identified. Results: In both full and shortened form of the BIDR, an adequate mode fit was identified for dichotomous scoring of responses (CFI > 0.95; RMSEA < 0.05) but not for continuous scoring. Reliability indicators showed satisfactory values (a or « > 0.8) for the full version of the scale and for the overall score of its shortened 16-item version. Correlations with other variables (moral disengagement r = - 0.38, self-esteem r = 0.55, life satisfaction r = 0.16, age r = 0.17) were in correspondence with theoretical assumptions. Conclusion: The Slovak version of the BIDR scale for measuring desirable responding is a reliable measure of the indicated characteristics, has similar measurement properties to the original or other language versions of the instrument, and can be considered an appropriate measure for the use in social science research and psychodiagnostics. Dichotomous scoring of responses and a shortened 16-item version of the BIDR are recommended for further use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
