Abstract

The design of alkali-activated soil reinforcement grouts faces several challenges regarding the required rheological, mechanical and microstructural properties. In this type of applications, the wide variety of source materials and the necessary addition of water affect the structuration processes and extend to the hardened state properties. A comprehensive characterisation of the specificities of these materials and the relations between the multiple factors is essential. This study aims at linking the physicochemical aspects of alkali-activated materials and their early age as well as long term behaviour. This analysis was carried using conventional evaluation methods as well as innovative approaches to examine the influential parameters for a rational design process. Coupling micromechanics and multiscale homogenisation can offer valuable data and help relate the microstructure to the macroscopic mechanical properties. Finally, the better resistance of alkali-activated materials in acid conditions provides a solution for projects involving chemically aggressive environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
