Abstract

Motivation to learn is the object of study of many subject areas of knowledge as it relates to school learning. This study aims to investigate the motivation to learn and its components intrinsic motivation/IM and extrinsic motivation/EM in high school adolescents of a military school, checking differences in the types of motivation by gender and age. Participants were 236 adolescents aged 14 to 18 years old (M=15.5, SD=0.84) of both genders, being 138 (59%) girls. They were used as instruments for data collection The Learning Motivation Assessment Scale for High School Students (EMA-EM) and a form of socio-demographic data. Data analyzes were performed using descriptive statistical analysis and Student's test. The results showed that the IM is greater than the EM. In relation to age, there was only a significant difference for total motivation, with younger teens being more motivated than the elders. The results are discussed based on the intrinsic and extrinsic motivational theory and demonstrate that, in general, adolescents are motivated to learn. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
