Abstract
- In this study, a model for the structure and genesis of subject-specific self-concepts in the study of psychology is developed and tested with a sample of 170 students. In two generalized I/E models, one with the base subjects and one with the application subjects, the effects of subject-specific achievements on subject-specific self-concepts in the same subjects (social comparisons) and in the other subjects (dimensional comparisons) are estimated. Moreover, it is tested if and to what extent the self-concepts in the base subjects show effects on the self-concepts in the application subjects. Both for the base subjects and for the application subjects positive social comparisons effects are shown. Negative dimensional comparison effects are shown in the I/E model with the application subjects, but hardly in the I/E model with the base subjects. In addition, there are positive effects of the self-concepts in the base subjects on the self-concepts in content-related application subjects. The results are discussed, among others, in respect of the support of subject-specific self-concepts in the study of psychology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
