Abstract

In this study, 14 terrecota lamps brought to the museum by means of confiscation or transfer were examined in Giresun Museum inventory. The lamps divided into two groups, Hellenistic and Roman periods, also grouped under separate types in themselves. In this context, while there were six types of lamps dated back to Hellenistic period, the Roman period artifacts were examined under four types. Since the lamps with unknown finding location were not localized, they were tried to date through comparison with the existing lamp catalogs rather than its layer of finding location. At the end of the study, 7 of the lamps were dated to the Hellenistic period, and 7 of them were dated to Roman period. These data obtained were obtained as a result of comparison of form, dough and lining properties of similar lamps. No excavations were carried out in the region except excavations in Giresun Island. There were no lamps found in the excavations carried out in Giresun Island, where the remains of the present day were dated to the Middle Ages. New excavations and findings to be carried out in the region in the future will undoubtedly shed light on the archeology of the region. Moreover, future studies will allow determination of lamp workshops and their interaction with neighboring cultures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
