This article aims to show the similarities and differences between the dark night of the soul described by St. John of the Cross and depression, by analyzing the processes which the saint experienced from the perspective of psychiatry and establishing various comparisons with the depressive state. We will see that though the two processes result in darkness and suffering and have external symptoms in common, they are internally very different, especially in their meaning, evolution and impact on the lives of those who experience them.
