Abstract

Cast steel H-shaped beam to circular tube column joints are formed by using cast-steel stiffener rings that replace the conventional stiffeners in joints. The moment transferring mechanism and bearing capacity of the cast steel joints were analyzed in this paper. A theoretical model for the deformation of the cylindrical shell under normal concentrated forces was proposed. Based on a deformation compatibility condition, the load transferring mechanism was revealed. It is proved that the moment applied to the joint is shared by both the cast steel stiffeners and the circular tube column. A bearing capacity prediction model was proposed based on yield line theory. Four series of nine specimens of the joints were studied by static experimental test and parametric finite element analyses were conducted to verify the load distribution rule and the formula of the bearing-capacity behavior of the joints. It is shown that for the following cases : the outside diameter of the steel tube column ranges from 203 to 500 mm,the radius-to-thickness ratio of the steel tube column is between 12 and 25,the width of cast steel ring ranges from 20 to 50 mm, and the thickness of cast steel ring ranges from 30 to 120 mm, the bearing capacities of the joints given by the theoretical model agree well with the finite element analysis prediction. The proposed load transferring mechanism and bearing capacity model of the cast steel joints are verified through the experimental and finite element results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
