Abstract

The Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) is a national population-based survey with departmental-level and area of residence representation, constituting a source of information on the health status of the Peruvian population. In order to standardize its processing and later reuse by the academic community and other interested actors, we documented the code for manipulation, analysis and visualization from the 2017 DHS's health questionnaire data, through a hypertension and obesity prevalence example, using the free R statistical environment and programming language. We sequentially present and detail the R code, as well as the theoretical basis of the survey's structure needed for the manipulation of the databases, considering that the complex structure of the DHS could be a potential barrier faced by researchers. Finally, this example can serve as a basis for generating further studies based on the DHS that are relevant to public health decision-making. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
