Abstract

This article presents a study on sociolinguistic variation, in French and in a teaching context in Poland. The mastery of variation is an important part of the learner's linguistic competence, and yet it is rarely treated as such by textbooks. In a study taking place simultaneously in a Polish university and in an Alliance Française, we tried to verify if it is possible to teach the sociolinguistic competence to the learners by applying two methods over two semestres. Firstly, we experimented an implicit teaching, by exposing the learners to the spoken language of a native teacher. Then we observed the effects of an explicit teaching of variation, with the teacher openly explaining its rules. In this article, after a brief summary of what is the sociolinguistic variation and why it belongs to language classrooms, we present the context of the study, its progress and its results, that bring us important information for the continuation of our research project.
