Abstract

An analysis of the woody and herbaceous vegetation from one savanna of La Vega, Sucre state, Venezuela, was accomplished through exploratory routes and the establishment of 7 transects 100 x 10 m (1000 m²), covering a total area of 7000 m². The presence of 95 Magnoliopsida and Liliopsida species was evidenced, corresponding to 29.47% woody and 70.53% herbaceous, included in 78 genera and 30 families. The studied site corresponds to a seasonal savanna, in which there was a stratum of dominant herbaceous species, with a predominance of Trachypogon spicatus specimens and scatter woody species typical of this vegetation type, such as Curatella americana, Bowdichia virgilioides, Palicourea rigida and Byrsonima crassifolia. Four woody and ten herbaceous species found in this study had not been previously reported for the Venezuelan flatlands, while Eugenia aff. galalonensis and Paspalum aff. pectinatum were new report for Sucre state. The Venezuelan endemic species Rondetelia cumanensis was reported and Coutarea hexandra was included as new collection for the IRBR Herbarium. Within the woody plants, the Rubiaceae family was richer in species (4 spp.); while among the herbaceous plants, the families Fabaceae (16 spp.), Poaceae (11 spp.), Asteraceae (7 spp.), Convolvulaceae (5 spp.) and Malvaceae (5 spp.) were the most dominant. The studied species showed typical adaptations for surviving in this type of environment: growth in tillers, thick bark or with fire resistant cork, xilopodial root, large and rigid leaves, among others.
