Abstract

The article offers information on the USS Borie, a Clemson-class flush-deck destroyer commissioned in 1920, and was used by the U.S. Navy during World War II. It describes the ship's battle with U-405 in 1943 that had transformed it from a mediocre warship into a submarine killer. Also discussed is the example set by Lieutenant Charles Hutchins and his crew of what a ship can accomplish in the heat and aftermath of combat.
