Abstract

In general, then, internal migration trends in the transition countries were considered to reflect the balance between moves generated by new opportunities and coping problems in major metropolitan areas. The purpose of this report is to, analyze the three specific trends of urbanization, suburbanization, and counterurbanization in post-Soviet Estonia, a country that experienced radical political and economic reforms during the l990s, and compare these findings with migration patterns in other FSU and ECE transition countries. The following section outlines the theoretical foundations of the study followed by an overview of migration in Estonia during the Soviet period. The data and methods employed are then discussed, followed by empirical analysis of internal migration trends.
