Multihalle Mannheim – how to continue with Frei Otto's wooden lattice shell? The lightweight and wide spanning wooden grid shell of the Multihalle Mannheim, conceived and developed for the 1975 Federal Garden Show by the late architect Frei Otto, is getting up in years. The extraordinary lattice construction finds worldwide acknowledgement. Since 1998, the Multihalle ranks as a listed monument. Because of increasing damage, the hall had to be closed in 2011. Since then, different ideas have arisen about what can be done with the building and what can it be used for. Hereinafter the origin and the current state of the wooden grid shell will be described and the possibilities and limits of technical repair and monument preservation will be expounded.
