Abstract
- The article discusses 17th and 18th century medicine which held that inhaling, snorting, and snuffing various products such as powders and snuff could be a healthful remedy to treat and cure diseases. It considers beliefs that tobacco use helped treat illnesses including the French Pox (venereal disease), migraines, gout, and toothaches. A book written by Dr Richard Lower promoted the use of powders made up of ingredients including lily of the valley, wild ginger and white hellebore to treat various ailments.
