Abstract

The article reports that Berkeley, California Mayor Jesse Arreguin is concerned on whether health care company Sutter Health spends enough on community benefits to justify its tax-exempt status. It has been reported that Sutter spent 124 million U.S. dollars in 2017. Of Sutter's 612 million U.S. dollars in community benefit in 2017, 334 million U.S. dollars was a non-cash expense. Sutter was sued by California Attorney General Xavier Becerra for its approach to contracting with insurers.
