Abstract

Introduction: Arterial hypertension is one of the most common conditions that occur during pregnancy in women. It is considered as topical issue whose epidemiological importance is growing. These disorders are a major global health problem. The purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence and to identify risk factors for high blood pressure in pregnancy in our environment. Patients and methods: This is a single-center study conducted at the Hopital Provincial du Nord Kivu in Goma town, from January the 1st, 2008 to December the 31st, 2013. This is a casecontrol study, comparing the outcome Hypertensive women of all types, to a control group of non-hypertensive births recruited by random draw after each delivery in the service, according to the report a witness for one case. Results: For this study, the prevalence of high blood pressure during pregnancy was 1.8%. The risk factors identified (OR, 95% CI) were: lower extremity edema's presence (9.31 [3.57-24.26]), personal history of hypertension (6.35 [1.4 - 28.78]), obesity (4.18 [2.6-6.72]), nulliparity (2.52 [1.58 - 4.03]), primigestity (2.44 [1.49 - 3.99]), large multiparity (2.26 [1.13 - 4.53]), age greater than or equal to 36 years (2.21 [1.17-4.19]) and poor follow-up of antenatal visits (1.62 [1.07-2.44]). Conclusion: The prevalence of high blood pressure during pregnancy seems low in our environment, but the identification of risk factors remains important to prevent its complications. These risk factors were dominated by primigestity and nulliparity. The poor quality of the antenatal visits is also a risk factor because it doesn't allow specific monitoring of pregnant women exposed to this disease, including those with a history of hypertension and obesity.
