Abstract

Discusses a study on how efforts to reduce the trafficking of people may be making conditions worse for voluntary migrants. How multinational, governmental and non-governmental groups working to counter trafficking sometimes misinterpret the cultural context in which migration occurs; Health risks associated with trafficking; Description of research in Mali and Cambodia that shows disturbing parallels in ways that anti-trafficking measures can contribute to adverse health outcomes; Way that attempts to eradicate migration of young people for work will increase their reliance on corrupt officials and use of clandestine routes; Need for programs that provide migrants with appropriate services and help advocate for better work conditions in destination countries.
