Abstract

This study was carried out to determine the effects of cold stratification (30 and 60 days), scarification with sulphuric acid (H2SO4, 30 and 60 minutes), 80oC hot water treatment (15 and 30 minutes), hot water + cold stratification (4 treatments) and H2SO4 + cold stratification (4 treatments) on enhancement of germination and emergence of hard seeded terebinth (Pistacia terebinthus L.) seeds. Terebinth seeds were collected from Kahramanmaraş province of Turkey and pericarp of seeds were dehulled after 48 hours in water. Nontretaed terebinth seeds were used as a control. Seed moisture, tetrazolium test, germination and emergence tests were carried out in terebinth seeds. Viability of terebinth seeds was determined as 93.00% in tetrazolium test. The effects of dormancy breaking treatments on germination, emergence, mean germination and emergence times were significant. The highest germination (39.50%) and emergence (39.50%) were obtained from 60 days cold stratification treatment and germination and emergence of control treatment were determined as 0.00%. H2SO4 + cold stratification treatments significantly reduced mean germination and emergence times compared with the other treatments. Mean germination and emergence times of control, hot water and hot water + cold stratification treatments were not calculated due to there were no germination and emergence in these treatments.
