Abstract

Obesity and one of its corollaries, type 2 diabetes, are real public health problems. The failure of "traditional" medical treatments has favored the development of surgery, recognized as one of the most effective long-term treatments. Metabolic surgery (a term that replaces that of bariatric surgery) is a real therapeutic alternative for patients with type 2 diabetes. The latest recommendations advocate early integration among the therapeutic options to be considered, particularly in patients with severe obesity or with insufficiently controlled diabetes. Surgical treatment is a last resort and is conceived in the continuity of a coordinated care path, with a follow-up of the patient before and after the surgery. HAS recommends the establishment of a therapeutic education program to optimize its effectiveness and tolerance. But the current craze for bariatric surgery should not overshadow its evaluation with little data on the long term. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
