Abstract

Construction is one of the major industries that contribute a large portion of GDP to a country. However, at the same time, construction activities had a significant effect on the environment. Thus, the government all around the world, including Malaysia, is moving towards a more environmentally sustainable construction or green construction. However, there have been numerous reports indicating that this movement had not been effective, which may be due to a number of barriers. This study used the established method of KAP to determine the barriers for contractors in Malaysia in practicing green construction. Based on the study, it was found that while knowledge of green construction may not be a problem for the contractors in Malaysia, the impact of green construction on the time and cost of the construction project may be the significant barrier in the implementation of green construction. Thus, in moving towards green construction, the government of Malaysia needs to focus on the issues of time and cost of the implementation of green construction through aid such as financial incentives and expertise.
