Abstract

Introduction: Spleen is the largest lymphoid organ in the body. Splenomegaly is the increase in spleen volume, in varying degrees of clinical detection by palpation of the abdomen or by various imaging investigations. Aim of the paper: The present paper aims to review the etiology of splenomegaly in children (hematological, oncological, digestive, infectious, metabolic diseases, etc.) and to point out the steps necessary to evaluate the pediatric patient with splenomegaly, starting from anamnesis, clinical examination, laboratory and imaging investigations, as well as the therapeutic options. Conclusion: Therapeutic management in the child with splenomegaly includes the treatment of the underlying disease. Splenectomy is required in symptomatic patients or in the presence of complications caused by enlarged spleen. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
