Abstract: The article explores how artificial intelligence (AI) is making it possible, and easy, to manipulate audio and video. Particular focus is given to how this may increase the spread of disinformation on social media, thus having profound effects on public discourse and political stability. Additional topics include AI detection tools to flag fake videos, how fake news was a factor in the 2016 elections in the U.S., and how fake video is especially effective at provoking fear.
