Abstract

The article discusses globus cruciger, a cross-topped orb or globe, and the Spanish empire during the Enlightenment. Topics include the interrelationship between science and religion, the symbolic meanings of the globus cruciger, it's use as regalia, the scientific and philosophic understandings of spheres and ellipses, and the Jesuits spread of Western and Christian symbolism.
