Abstract
- School refusal is characterized as an anxiety-driven avoidance of attending or participating in school and has been associated with a myriad of negative implications for short- and long-term development and functioning. Chronic medical illness has been identified as a risk factor for school refusal in children and adolescents. However, the existing literature regarding the treatment of school refusal in the context of chronic medical illness is scarce. This case study aims to illustrate the predisposing factors, presentation of symptoms, and course of treatment in a case of school refusal in an adolescent with symptoms of anxiety and depression and comorbid medical complications.
