Abstract

The paper contributes to the analysis of the tourism economy by using the concept of extractivism, with a focus on the urban context. Through the analysis of the case of Venice, I aim at highlighting the specific characteristics of the affirmation of this model in historical cities which are widespread in the Italian and Mediterranean context. By questioning the processes of heritization at work, I aim at framing the museification and the commodification of the historical city as steps in the affirmation of the extractivist model rooted in the overall transformations of urban contemporary society. Finally I try to delineate a research agenda based around the idea of the city as a common which is able to represent an alternative to the extractivist logics, thus contributing to the perspective of the "right to the city".
