Abstract

The article discusses how the government of the Confederate States of America utilized the military detention facility Castle Thunder Prison in Richmond, Virginia, to reinforce the concepts of paternalism and gender roles and notions of masculinity, femininity, and nationalism during the U.S. Civil War. It also argues that Caste Run demonstrated an upset in the social order of the South.
