Abstract

This work intends to describe the space constituted in the rural district of Pelotas, located in Rio Grande do Sul, and that was permeated by cultures of diverse groups ethnics. During the nineteenth century, we highlight the presence of Portugueses, aboriginals and blacks, and in this context had a great animosity due to antagonistic interests. Approaching the assumptions of abolition, the authorities adopted as a strategy to occupy the territory the foundation of colonies, restricting the spaces used by blacks. Thus colonies of French, German, Pomeranian and Italian immigrants were founded. Cerqueira and Silva (2011), authors who help us in this reflection, write that the rural district in question was constituted by a cultural mosaic. In view of the above, we believe that it is necessary to discuss aboutacquaintanceship between ethnic groups cited, as well as the configuration of the borders established from these experiences.
