Abstract

The article discusses politics in the early modern Republic of Venice, focusing particularly on the vacanza ducale (ducal vacancy) of 1595 which lasted almost four weeks before the election of Marino Grimani as doge to replace the deceased 86th doge Pasquale Cicogna. Topics include official record keeping in early modern Venice which didn't allow the recording of debates, political attitudes by the governed classes, guilds, and the social conditions of women and servants.
