Abstract

Athletic activities that include repetitive jumping motions represent a mechanical challenge for the knee joint. Chronic atraumatic pain is often localized at the inferior pole of the patella, subsequently leading to the diagnosis of a tendinopathy of the patella tendon. In most cases, the clinical examination shows an unsuspicious joint with tenderness at the caudal knee cap. Radiologic imaging using ultrasound can illustrate degeneration of the profound fibers of the tendon or edema, and hyperintensity of the Hoffa fat pad is seen in the MRI. Different extrinsic and intrinsic risk factors can be addressed mostly with physiotherapy. Depending on the clinical development, the jumper's knee is classified by Blazina grade I—IV and in 90% treated conservatively. To operatively realize a satisfactory result, several open or arthroscopic procedures are available.
