Abstract

Objective: To explore the status quo of presenteeism in nurses and the mediating effect of presenteeism on relationships among work family conflict, psychological symptom, and job satisfaction. Methods: A sample of 349 female nurses from a third-level hospital in Henan Province were assessed with the Sickness Presenteeism Questionnaire( SPQ) , Work-Family Conflict Scale (WFCS, includes 2 dimensions of work-family conflict and family-work conflict), 12-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) and Job Satisfaction Scale (JSS). Bootstrap was used to test the mediating effect. Results: The mean of SPQ was (3. 3 ±0. 7) in this sample, and the mean of SPQ was higher in married nurses than in those not married [(3. 3 ±0. 7)vs. (3. 1±- 0. 7), P <0. 01]. The scores of work-family conflict, family-work conflict and SPQ total scores were positively correlated with the GHQ-12 total scores (β =0. 25, 0. 17, 0. 12). The scores of SPQ and work-family conflict total scores were negatively correlated with the J SS total scores (β = -0. 14, -0. 13). Bootstrap test showed that presenteeism partially mediated the relationship between work-family conflict and psychological symptom, and the mediating effect was 12%. Presenteeism partially mediated the relationship between work-family conflict and job satisfaction, and the mediating effect was 24%. Conclusion: The frequency of presenteeism is higher in nurses, presenteeism may have a partial mediating effect among work family conflict and psychological symptom, job satisfaction in nurses.
