Abstract

In-service training for teachers plays an important role in China. The most important providers are teacher training institutes and schools as well as educational colleges. Two basic forms of in-service training can be distinguished: teacher in-service training which leads to a degree/qualification vs. in-service training without a degree/qualification. In practice, various models of in-service teacher training have been developed, such as school-based models, university-based models, distance learning models, and mobile models of in-service teacher training. Despite the progress made in the past, there are still many quality and structural problems in in-service training for teachers. In future, in-service training in China will develop in the following directions: improving the quality of the training, up-grading the financial situation and the participation opportunities of teachers in underdeveloped regions, spreading the internet-based in-service training, and providing more autonomy for teachers.
