Abstract

Gastroschisis is a rare congenital malformation in newborns; however its high mortality makes it a very important malformation to take into account. There are certain risk factors such as teenage pregnancy, being the product of a primiparous, smoking habit and low educational level. In recent years there has been an increase in its prevalence, however it has not been widely studied in Ecuador. We present the clinical case of a pregnant woman of 18 years, first-time mother, of low socioeconomic and educational level, with poor prenatal control who attends at 32 weeks with the threat of preterm delivery and urinary tract infection, which evolves to vaginal delivery with the obtaining of a product with gastroschisis, which dies at birth. The mother presented numerous known risk factors, such as age, low socioeconomic level, exposure to tobacco smoke, and poor prenatal control, which is crucial for planning the delivery and the immediate management of the newborn, highlighting the importance of to knowing this pathology, its associated risk factors, as well as the importance of training the community on adequate prenatal care in order to avoid a fatal outcome such as the one in this case.
